About the Artist
Bad Hare Pottery is the brain child of yours truly, Lori Eagle Claw Straatmann.
I received my baccalaureate degree in Art at the University of Northern Iowa
and have been working in clay for over 15 years.
Bad Hare was created as an outlet for my fascination with medieval functional
pottery. Using archaeological texts and extant museum examples, I endeavor
to recreate pots that existed during the Middle Ages.
Finding solutions to creating safe pottery that has the same look and feel of
period pottery is challenging, but I find this to be as interesting as the forms
themselves. Bad Hare pots contain no lead, are food safe, dishwasher safe
and are usable in ovens and on campfires if used properly.
One of my greatest joys is seeing one of my creations in use. I love receiving
pictures and testimonials from those who own and use the pots I have made.
Custom work brings another joy, the joy of new discovery. I encourage you to
discuss custom order ideas with me. Who knows? Perhaps your discovery
will be the next hottest thing on the reenactors' list of "must-have"s.
I also greatly enjoy clay oddities. I love discovering documented clay vessels
that serve unusual purposes or have a unique shape. Examples of some of
my favorite finds are the
16th C. Crayfish trap and
a medieval chicken feeder.
